137 police shots, 2 dead: many questions in Ohio

CLEVELAND (AP) – A deadly police chase in Cleveland has left a trail of angry relatives of the victims and accusations of civil rights violations.
The chase in November began with a pop _ perhaps a gunshot or backfire from a car. Police don’t know why the driver refused to stop. Eventually, 13 officers fired 137 rounds, killing both people in the fleeing car.
The state has taken over the case, but victims’ family members and civil-rights groups want a federal investigation.
The fallout has cast Cleveland police in an uneasy light amid complaints about a racially motivated killing with no evidence the victims were armed.
The officers have been assigned to desk duties. Their union defends their actions against a suspect who rammed a patrol car and drove toward an officer on foot.
