Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio announced Monday detectives rescued 15 animals that were found underfed and neglected in a home in Tonopah, Ariz.
The homeowner, who was identified as Pat Mahan, 73, will be charged with 15 misdemeanor counts of animal neglect, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said. More charges could be forthcoming following medical exams of the animals, which included dogs, birds, ducks, geese and a guinea pig.
Neighbors contacted the Sheriff’s office to complain about the unsanitary conditions the animals were living in. The conditions were of a severe hoarding scenario for the animals, and detectives found decaying food throughout the house.
Sheriff Arpaio said that with the record breaking heat in the Valley, homeowners shouldn’t be leaving animals in extreme living conditions. It was reported to be 100 degrees in the house.
