Oct 26, 2012, 6:01 PM

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) – Former Vice President Walter Mondale and U.S. Sen. John Kerry are among the hundreds of people who have turned out for a funeral to honor former U.S. Sen. George McGovern.

Mondale and Kerry arrived shortly before the service was to start at the Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls.

McGovern, a three-time Democratic presidential candidate, died Sunday. He was 90.

Following news of McGovern’s death, Kerry released a statement saying McGovern was a “voice of clarity and conviction at a time when America needed it most.”

Also in attendance is one-time presidential hopeful Gary Hart. He was scheduled to speak at the service.

McGovern will be buried in a private ceremony in Washington at a later date.
