FIRE ISLAND, N.Y. (AP) – Authorities have identified two New York men who were killed after a small plane crashed into an inlet on Long Island.
Suffolk County police on Sunday said the men were 51-year-old Cyril McLavin, of Fresh Meadows in Queens, and 72-year-old Andrew Messana, from Bayside, Queens.
The crash happened around 3 p.m. Saturday, when the plane went down in Moriches inlet, near the eastern end of Fire Island. It sank in about 15 to 20 feet of water, with the men trapped inside.
The Globe Swift aircraft had left from Spadaro Airport, not far from the crash site, earlier Saturday.
The men’s bodies were recovered Saturday night. The plane has been retrieved.
Federal officials are investigating the crash.
