The weather service tweeted the news about 3 p.m., which means the mercury could continue to creep a degree or two higher.
Friday’s record comes during the first day of an excessive heat warning that was issued for the Phoenix area. The warning extends through Monday.
The weather service is calling for a high of 114 on both Saturday and Sunday and 109 on Monday.
Despite the warning, Austin Jamison with the National Weather Service said such heat this time of year is not out of the ordinary.
“These temperatures are about 10 degrees above normal,” he said. “It’s not that we’re looking at epic, record heat.”
Last year, Phoenix hit 112 degrees on June 15 and the heat was consistent through the remainder of the month.
The hottest day of the month was June 18 at 115 degrees.
