Immigration bills signed, vetoed by Gov. Brown

(AP) – Immigration bills signed by California Gov. Jerry Brown:
_ Immigrant driver licenses: Some illegal immigrants could get California drivers licenses under AB2189. The bill by Assemblyman Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, will let the Department of Motor Vehicles issue licenses to young illegal immigrants eligible for work permits under a new Obama administration policy.
_ Family reunification: This bill aims to prevent immigrant children from being separated from family when their parents are being deported. SB1064 lets children who can’t be reunited with their parents be placed under a relative’s custody and gives parents additional time to meet court requirements for family reunification. The goal is to prevent the unnecessary placement of these children in foster care.

Immigration bills vetoed by Brown:
_ Illegal immigrants: AB1081 was known as “anti-Arizona” legislation and could have protected illegal immigrants from deportation if they weren’t charged with serious or violent crimes. The bill by Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, D-San Francisco, would have limited California law enforcement’s participation in certain aspects of a federal program that checks the immigration status of arrestees.
_ Domestic workers: AB889, dubbed the Domestic Workers of Bill of Rights, would have provided overtime pay, meal breaks and other labor protections to caregivers, nannies and house cleaners in California. The legislation was proposed by Ammiano and V. Manuel Perez, D-Coachella.
_ Farmworkers: AB2676 would have strengthened regulations requiring growers to protect their workers from extreme heat.
