Armed man confronts police at Phoenix mall, dies in gunfire exchange

PHOENIX — Phoenix police shot and killed a man they said fired at them at least a half-dozen times at a dark strip mall.
Police said they were responding to call about a man who was cursing and banging a gun on shop windows and doors at the mall at 75th Avenue and McDowell Road around midnight Wednesday.
When they arrived, the suspect pointed a gun at them, Sgt. Trent Crump said.
“Several rounds were fired. We believe three to four officers … exchanged or fired at the suspect, who was concealed behind a pillar in front of the store,” he said.
No officers were injured.
Witnesses told the police the man had been acting strange.
“They described him as literally frothing at the mouth,” Crump said.
A worker cleaning the parking lot called in the emergency.
Phoenix firefighters also responded.
