Report: Utah officials could make pipelines safer

Sep 13, 2012, 7:57 PM

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – A new report finds authorities could do more to prevent massive oil spills in Utah like a pair in 2010 that contaminated a lake, but officials will have to decide if it’s worth the cost.

The report was commissioned by Salt Lake City and released this week by the nonprofit Pipeline Safety Trust. It comes after a Chevron pipeline failure in June 2010 released 33,000 gallons of oil into Red Butte Creek and Liberty Lake. About 21,000 gallons spilled nearby, in Salt Lake City’s eastern foothills, six months later.

Trust executive director Carl Weimer says regulators could do more to ensure the safety of the pipelines, and the oil and gas industry could be more transparent in its pipeline inspections.

Mayor Ralph Becker says Salt Lake City needs to take the lead on protecting the community, rather than leaving the job to the industry.
