Home gas explosion blamed on Calif. earthquake

Aug 9, 2012, 4:07 PM

ONTARIO, Calif. (AP) – A Southern California earthquake caused a house explosion that sent a man in his 70s to the hospital with minor injuries.

The Inland Valley Daily Bulletin (

Authorities say the quake caused material stored in the garage to fall over, opening a natural gas valve. A water heater ignited the gas and the resulting explosion shattered windows in the home and a neighboring residence, started a small fire and hurled the garage door into a neighbor’s yard.

Damage was put at $200,000.

The quake was one in a series that began with another 4.5-magnitude temblor late Tuesday.
