PHILADELPHIA (AP) – The U.S. Mint in Philadelphia is opening a new tour to visitors on July 3.
It’s the first upgrade in more than 40 years. Mint officials say the update was sorely needed and some visitors had even complained in recent years after going through the old tour.
The new $3.9 million exhibit includes artifacts and coins from the Mint’s earliest days, as well as windows overlooking the production floor with touch screens and interactive features that illustrate the coin-making process.
Mint spokesman Tom Jurkowsky says the new tour really shows the skill and artistry involved in making America’s coins.
About 250,000 people visit the Mint a year. The facility in Philadelphia makes around 25 million coins every day.
