Kayaker says he survived great white shark attack

May 15, 2012, 3:06 PM

CAMBRIA, Calif. (AP) – A kayaker says he was attacked by a 14-foot-long great white shark as he and his friends fished off the coast of Central California and that he escaped any injuries.

The San Luis Obispo County Tribune (
http://bit.ly/L3btUp) reports that Joey Nocchi believes a shark took a giant bite _ about 22 inches wide _ of his kayak on Saturday afternoon, off the coast of Cambria.

Nocchi says the shark slammed into him from under and that his friends watched as it launched him “out of the water 4 to 5 feet.” His friends told him the shark’s jaws were open.

The 30-year-old says he got back on his leaking kayak and quickly paddled to shore with them.

He says he will probably stay out of the ocean for a while.

Troubling questions unresolved in latest end to Till case

By her own telling, Mississippi authorities provided Carolyn Bryant Donham with preferential treatment rather than prosecution after her encounter with Emmett Till led to the lynching of the Black teenager in the summer of 1955. Instead of arresting Donham on a warrant that accused her of kidnapping days after Till’s abduction, an officer passed along […]

R Kelly accuser to give key testimony on trial-fixing charge

CHICAGO (AP) — R. Kelly’s federal trial in Chicago that starts Monday is in many ways a do-over of his 2008 state child pornography trial, at which jurors acquitted the singer on charges that he produced a video of himself when he was around 30 having sex with a girl no older than 14. There’s […]

Conspiracies complicate voting machine debate in Louisiana

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The need for Louisiana to replace its voting machines is not in dispute. They are badly outdated — deployed in 2006, the year after Hurricane Katrina struck — and do not produce paper ballots that are critical to ensuring election results are accurate. What to do about them is another […]

Climate bill: Could coal communities shift to nuclear?

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A major economic bill headed to the president has “game-changing” incentives for the nuclear energy industry, experts say, and those tax credits are even more substantial if a facility is sited in a community where a coal plant is closing. The transformative bill provides the most spending to fight climate change […]
