PASADENA, Calif. (AP) – Chimpanzee expert Jane Goodall has been named grand marshal of Pasadena’s 2013 Rose Parade.
The Tournament of Roses announced the honor Wednesday in a ceremony where Goodall greeted well-wishers with the kind of chimpanzee call that can be heard in Tanzania’s Gombe National Park.
Goodall says she was startled when she was asked to be grand marshal, noting that life with chimpanzees out in the wilds of Africa is “kind of different” than Pasadena.
As grand marshal, the British primatologist will ride in the New Year’s Day Rose Parade and attend the Rose Bowl football game.
