Fiance in slaying case unaware of miscarriage

HOUSTON (AP) – The fiance of the woman charged with fatally shooting a Houston-area mother and snatching her 3-day-old child says he thought she had given birth in Galveston weeks earlier and that the baby was being treated in a hospital.
Kevin Carter, 26, says he wasn’t aware Verna McClain had suffered a miscarriage and didn’t know about it until he saw the news reports of McClain’s arrest for gunning down Kala Golden, of Spring.
Authorities believe McClain was so desperate for a child that last week she abducted Golden’s infant after shooting the mother.
Carter told Houston television station KPRC on Tuesday (

He also said he hasn’t spoken with McClain since her arrest.
