WASHINGTON (AP) – The White House is strongly condemning efforts by Guinea Bissau’s military to seize power from the country’s civilian leadership and calling for immediate restoration of the legitimate government.
White House press secretary Jay Carney says in a statement that the U.S. remains “deeply concerned” about the safety of interim President Raimundo Pereira and other senior officials. The U.S. is calling for the release of all government leaders and urging reconciliation.
Pereira and Prime Minister Carlos Gomes Jr. have been detained in the West African country that is prone to political unrest and is due to hold a presidential runoff election April 29. Gomes was the front-runner.
The White House says it welcomes the condemnation of the unrest by the Economic Community of West African States and the U.N. Security Council.
