1 worker dies, 3 hurt in NYC construction accident

NEW YORK (AP) – Fire officials say a partial building collapse in New York City has killed one construction worker and injured three others.

The single-family home was under construction in Brooklyn’s Gerritsen Beach neighborhood.

Fire officials say a 25-year-old worker was trapped after the partial collapse late Tuesday morning. He was taken to a hospital, where he died. Three others suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

A Department of Buildings spokeswoman says workers were enlarging the structure when the collapse occurred. She says workers had failed to properly secure the addition to the existing structure.

An emergency declaration has been issued to demolish the building. A neighboring building will be temporarily vacated.
