SANDAKAN, Malaysia (AP) – Emergency services and embassy officials are preparing help for 1,000 people on a partially disabled cruise ship headed for a Malaysian port after a fire left it adrift at sea for 24 hours.

The Azamara Quest was stranded southern Philippine waters after a fire engulfed one of its engine rooms Friday night. It restored propulsion the next night and is expected to reach the harbor of Sandakan city in Malaysia’s eastern state of Sabah on Borneo island late Sunday.

City police official Rudy Wiliding says authorities may have ambulances on standby, even though they have not received requests for assistance.

The ship’s operator has said no passengers are hurt. But five crew members suffered smoke inhalation, including one who was seriously injured.
