DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) – An Army staff sergeant suspected of killing 16 Afghans was cited for possessing alcohol on the beach in Florida 14 years ago.
A worker in the Volusia County Clerk of Courts office said Monday that Robert Bales was given the $65 citation in March 1998 at Daytona Beach.
Bales had 30 days to pay the citation or fight it in court. He did neither, and a warrant was put out for his arrest.
But officials say the warrant expired in August 2003. The case was dropped in March 2006 because of a lack of action in the case.
Bales has not been charged in the March 11 shootings although formal charges could be filed within a week.
