Arizona governor explains decision to skip hearing

PHOENIX (AP) – Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer is explaining her decision against testifying at a U.S. Senate subcommittee hearing on Arizona’s tough immigration law.
New York Sen. Charles Schumer invited Brewer to the April 24 hearing of the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Immigration, Refugees and Border Security.
But Brewer says it would be inappropriate to speak to Congress on the eve of oral arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court on the law.
Brewer signed the bill into law in 2010. The Justice Department filed a lawsuit and a federal court judge issued an injunction halting many parts of the law from going into effect. The Supreme Court will hear legal arguments surrounding that injunction April 25.
Brewer says the high court is the “proper venue in which to defend SB 1070.”
