Report: NJ ranks 6th for senior driver fatalities

Feb 23, 2012, 11:59 AM

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) – A new report shows New Jersey ranks sixth in the nation for the percentage of fatal crashes involving a senior driver.

The Road Information Project, or TRIP, released its findings this week. The group is recommending that more money be spent on driver education aimed at seniors.

The New Jersey Motor Vehicles Commission says the state ranks 10th in the nation for the number of drivers 65 or older, with more than 818,000 drivers in that age group.

TRIP Spokeswoman Carolyn Bonifas tells The Record of Woodland Park (

The report recommends clearer, simpler highway signs, bright street markings at intersections and extending the length of merge or exit lanes.
