SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) – A federal grand jury is to hear the case of a British man who’s accused of robbing an armored car in England and now faces a federal weapons charge in Missouri.
Edward Maher is suspected in the 1993 theft of the armored car containing the equivalent of about $1.5 million. He was arrested Feb. 8 on a charge of being an illegal immigrant with a firearm.
Authorities received a tip that he was living under his brother’s name and working as a cable technician in Ozark, about 160 miles southwest of Kansas City.
The judge at Maher’s preliminary hearing Wednesday in Springfield sent the weapons case to a grand jury, which will consider the evidence and determine if other charges are warranted. Maher’s public defender declined comment after the hearing.
