DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. (AP) – Authorities say three people are dead and two critically injured after a hostage standoff at a quiet Florida recreational vehicle park.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office reports that 41-year-old William De Jesus fatally shot 76-year-old Ovila Plante late Thursday outside the older man’s RV at Highland Woods RV Park in Deerfield Beach. De Jesus then barricaded himself inside the RV with his family and the dead man’s girlfriend, who eventually escaped.
After a seven-hour standoff, a SWAT team entered the RV early Friday. They found De Jesus and his 9-year-old son dead. De Jesus’ wife and 7-year-old son were suffering from stab wounds.
Authorities didn’t immediately have a motive for the attack. The De Jesus family was from central Florida. Plante and his girlfriend were on vacation from Quebec, Canada.
