PHILADELPHIA (AP) – The state has denied the unemployment claim filed by the ousted former head of Philadelphia’s public school system after she received a $900,000 contract buy-out.
Arlene Ackerman says she had her claim denied last month and she won’t appeal that decision.
Ackerman had requested the state maximum of $573 a week, based on her former salary of about $350,000. She was fired in August after clashing with community members, the teachers’ union and elected officials.
Following her ouster Ackerman claimed the buyout was fair compensation because the district had broken a contract that was to run through 2014.
A spokeswoman for the state Department of Labor and Industry said privacy laws prevent her from commenting on Ackerman’s claim.
