Pa. man jailed for ‘abandoned’ baby at hospital

Jan 31, 2012, 4:03 PM

SHARON, Pa. (AP) – A western Pennsylvania man is jailed on charges he left his girlfriend’s infant son at a hospital after claiming to find the child abandoned on a doorstep.

The Sharon Herald reports Tuesday that 33-year-old Jason Casteel Sr. faces a preliminary hearing on charges including concealing the baby’s whereabouts and interfering with the mother’s custody.

Officials at Sharon Regional Health System called police after Casteel allegedly dropped off the baby sometime after 1 a.m. Friday. Police went to Casteel’s home where they found the baby’s mother, who told them the 5-month-old was vomiting before Casteel offered to take him to the hospital. She believed Casteel planned to bring the boy home.

Online court records don’t list an attorney for Casteel, who isn’t the boy’s father. He faces a preliminary hearing Friday.
