Pa. man convicted of having killed missing wife

Jan 31, 2012, 3:47 AM

JIM THORPE, Pa. (AP) – An eastern Pennsylvania man whose estranged wife disappeared four years ago has been convicted of first-degree murder and tampering with evidence.

Court officials say a Carbon County jury convicted Ernest Freeby on Monday night in the death of 34-year-old Edwina Onyango, a Kenyan immigrant who vanished in December 2007.

Authorities allege she was placed in the coal bin in the basement of Freeby’s Lansford home. They say “a large quantity of blood” matching her DNA was found. Her body was never found.

Prosecutors say the 36-year-old Freeby killed his wife because he wanted to marry his girlfriend.

Freeby denies that and says his wife has several identities and may still be alive. His attorney had sought dismissal of the case due to a lack of evidence.
