Ex-clerk for NYC diocese sentenced for $1M theft

NEW YORK (AP) – A former clerk who embezzled more than $1 million from the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York has been sentenced to 4 1/2 to nine years in prison.
Anita Collins was sentenced Thursday in Manhattan. She pleaded guilty to grand larceny last month.
District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. said the thefts occurred over seven years.
The money was supposed to be used to run a central office for some of the area’s Catholic schools.
Prosecutors had said Collins spent some of the money on a doll collection and designer clothes. But her lawyer said she also may have used some to help her cancer-stricken daughter.
