NEW ORLEANS (AP) – Former Louisiana Gov. Edwin Edwards has been hospitalized with pneumonia but his wife says he is responding well to treatment.

“He’s tired, but overall he’s doing well” after being taken by ambulance on Saturday to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, his wife, Trina Scott Edwards, said in a Facebook message Sunday to The Associated Press.

Edwards “should be back to his old self in a couple of days,” she wrote.

Sunday evening, she added that doctors think he may be able to leave the hospital Tuesday.

The former governor, whose hospitalization was first reported in the Baton Rouge news media, is 84.

Dozens of people had offered good wishes on his wife’s Facebook page by Sunday night, and hundreds “liked” her public posting that he was out of intensive care.

Edwin Edwards served four terms as governor, then served more than eight years in federal prison after being convicted of racketeering. He began three years on probation in early July, after he completed six months of home detention.

The former governor’s own Facebook page maxed out at 5,000 “friends” within weeks of its launch in late June.

He married prison pen-pal Trina Grimes Scott on July 29, and marked his 84th birthday Aug. 7.

Trina Edwards, the former governor’s third wife, wrote to him after reading his authorized biography and becoming convinced that she had the wrong idea about him, Edwin Edwards said last year. After visiting him in prison, she asked if she could continue to see him. “I was 83 years old, in prison and broke,” Edwards said July 30. “That’s like throwing a life raft to someone who’s drowning.”
