AIKEN, S.C. (AP) – For the second time in as many months, more than 1,000 police officers and hundreds of others have gathered in this small South Carolina city to remember a fellow officer gunned down in the line of duty.
Services for Aiken police Master Cpl. Sandra Rogers were held Wednesday afternoon.
The 49-year-old Rogers died Saturday after she was shot while responding to a suspicious activity call. Joshua Tremaine Jones has been charged with murder, and also faces charges in the death of his ex-girlfriend.
Described as a “Mother Hen” to younger officers, Rogers had been an officer with the Aiken Department of Public Safety for nearly 28 years. State officials say she is the first female law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty in South Carolina.
Another Aiken officer, Scotty Richardson, was shot to death during a traffic stop in December.
