JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – An autopsy of a man accused of killing a Roman Catholic priest and taking the victim’s car on a family vacation to Walt Disney World shows he died in a jailhouse suicide.
Rankin County Coroner Jimmy Roberts told The Associated Press that the state medical examiner’s office concluded 33-year-old Jeremy Wayne Manieri died from death by hanging.
Manieri was found dead early Thursday in a prison cell in Rankin County with a sheet wrapped around his neck. He was not on suicide watch.
He had been charged with shooting the Rev. Ed Everitt of Hammond, La., in July 2011 at a beach house in Waveland, Miss.
Manieri’s attorney, Brian Alexander, says he was shocked by the suicide but his client was doubtful he would get a fair trial.
