NEW YORK (AP) – A 7-year-old Brooklyn boy died in one of two late-night fires that sent 10 other people to hospitals suffering from smoke inhalation.
Police say the child, Joel Smith, died in the blaze reported at 1:22 a.m. Sunday at an apartment building in Brooklyn’s Bushwick neighborhood. Three other people there suffered from smoke inhalation.
The second fire was reported in Brooklyn’s Sheepshead Bay at 11:20 p.m. Saturday; seven people required treatment for smoke inhalation as flames shot out of a window.
Authorities are investigating the causes of both blazes.
