Life has been forever changed for Kareka Watson. Her sister, best friend and roommate was killed.

“It’s hard. It’s really hard.”

Kareka and her sister, 23-year-old Shenika Watson, were only 10 months apart. They grew up in the Valley and Shenika went to Westview High School.

She was the mother of three girls, ages 2, 4 and 6. They’re still having a very hard time. Kareka and her grandmother are raising them.

“She liked to go out. She liked to have fun,” Kareka said. “She was like the life of the party. She made you smile because she was funny, goofy and just fun to be around.”

Watson loved Chris Brown and especially loved to dance to “Poppin.” She had dreams of opening a dance studio for youth. Kareka said that’s all her sister talked about.

On Jan. 12, 2010, just before 5 a.m., Watson’s body was found in a church parking lot near 64th Avenue and Indian School Road in Phoenix. Investigators said it was an extremely brutal crime.

“It’s obvious that this was not an accidental death,” Phoenix Police Sgt. Jamie Rothschild said. “Somebody harmed her intentionally and that somebody needs to be taken off the street.”

Kareka has a message for her sister’s killer or killers: “I just want them to have a conscience and know that her kids are hurting and her family is hurting.”
