AZ Political Podcast: Adrian Fontes discusses surprising allies on voter system glitch

Sep 27, 2024, 4:25 AM

PHOENIX — On this week’s AZ Political Podcast, Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes tells the tale of how nearly 100,000 Arizona voters almost ended up being disenfranchised — unable to vote on state and local races — and why, in searching for a solution, Republicans were willing to look the other way if some noncitizens ended up voting in November.

He tells me why he thinks that makes some members of the GOP hypocrites and points to his most recent opponent in a political race as someone who’s making money off election lies.

Secretary Fontes and I then delve into Kamala Harris‘ visit to the Arizona border and whether it runs the risk of turning off progressive voters.

That morphs into a wider conversation about immigration’s place in the American dream, racism’s place in the immigration debate and if the two major political parties will ever come to an understanding (and legislation) that ensures a safe and secure border and a welcoming attitude for immigrants — at the same time.

Don’t hold your breath waiting for that — but please do watch this week’s AZ Political Podcast!
