Drivers minding their own business on a freeway found themselves herding runaway pigs after a tractor-trailer carrying almost 200 hogs overturned near a rural Arizona town.

Four pigs escaped in the Monday crash along Interstate 15 in a gorge in northwestern Arizona, forcing closure of the highway in both directions.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety said motorists helped corral the pigs that wandered onto the road in the Virgin River Gorge between Mesquite, Nevada, and St. George, Utah.

Authorities said the truck driver was unharmed but several pigs were killed. The driver had smashed into a barrier wall.

The afternoon accident closed southbound I-15 well into Tuesday morning, when the Arizona Department of Transportation said the left lane remained closed.

The freeway cuts across Arizona’s uppermost northwest corner where it connects Las Vegas and Salt Lake City.
