PHOENIX – A wrong-way driver set off a crash involving four vehicles on a Phoenix-area freeway late Thursday, shutting down part of the road overnight, authorities said.

The head-on injury wreck closed westbound Loop 202 near Center Parkway in Tempe around 11:15 p.m., the Arizona Department of Public Safety said in an email Friday.

DPS said the driver of the first car that was hit suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital.

The driver going eastbound in the westbound lanes, a 37-year-old woman from Illinois, was then struck by other two vehicles, as was the first car.

The drivers of the trailing cars suffered minor injuries, DPS said.

The roadway reopened around 5:40 a.m.

No other details were immediately available.
