PHOENIX – At least one person was seriously injured in a rollover accident that shut down Interstate 10 heading into downtown Phoenix early Friday, authorities said.

A Volkswagen car traveling westbound near the juncture with northbound Interstate 17 and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport just past midnight lost control and rolled across all lanes of traffic before landing on its wheels, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

The driver and passenger of the vehicle then exited the vehicle and the passenger laid down in the HOV lane, where he was struck by another vehicle.

Witnesses said the vehicle was racing two others before the wreck, according to DPS. The passenger was transported to a local hospital for his injuries.

Westbound lanes were closed until about 6 a.m.

DPS said a white female passenger with red hair in a blue Nissan Maxima or Altima briefly stopped at the scene to talk to one of the occupants of the vehicle.

That witness was asked to call DPS at 877-272-8329 to assist with the investigation.

No other details were immediately available.
