PHOENIX – Broiling heat returns to metro Phoenix on Tuesday, with temperatures expected to reach 110 degrees, forecasters said, the hottest it’s been in over a month.

An excessive heat warning will go into effect at 10 a.m. Tuesday and end at 8 p.m. Wednesday, the National Weather Service said.

“We will have above-normal heat for the next seven days,” Sean Benedict, a meteorologist with the weather bureau’s Phoenix office, told KTAR News 92.3 FM early Tuesday.

“Normal this time of year is around 104 degrees.”

The norm looks to be taking a break this week. Wednesday’s high is leaning toward 107 degrees, Thursday 106, Friday 107 and Saturday 108. Overnight lows range in the mid-80s.

The excessive heat warning triggers a shutdown of select hiking trails in Phoenix.

Trails on Camelback Mountain and Piestewa Peak will be off limits to hikers Tuesday and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., per city policy.

There are no hot-weather restrictions on Scottsdale’s trail system, but fire department Capt. Dave Folio issued an extreme heat warning for his crews.

“We’ve canceled drills, we’re asking [our] people to stay inside, hydrate up and be ready for some of these trail rescues that we’re going to have possibly today,” he said to KTAR News on Tuesday.

Regional planning agency Maricopa Association of Governments has prepared a list of heat relief sites that operate during excessive heat warnings.
