PHOENIX – Crews broke ground on a new sports facility in Mesa, suspects were arrested in a Scottsdale robbery and the Arizona State Fair will offer fair lovers a drive-thru alternative.

Here are some stories that headlined the Arizona news cycle over the weekend.

Officials break ground on ambitious Legacy Sports Park in Mesa

Officials held a groundbreaking ceremony on Friday for Legacy Sports Park, a privately owned 320-acre venue set to open in January 2022 in Mesa.

The indoor/outdoor facility is expected to create around 1,500 jobs and generate around $200 million of annual economic impact, Chad Miller, CEO of Legacy Sports USA, said.

The plans call for a multi-sports building that will house 62 volleyball courts, 16 basketball courts, six futsal courts and a 75,000-square-foot esports arena and a 50,000-square-foot for gymnastics, cheer and dance center.

Police arrest 2 suspects after early morning armed robbery in Scottsdale

A man and woman were arrested Saturday after an early morning armed robbery at a Scottsdale store, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

The two suspects entered the store near the intersection of Camelback and Scottsdale roads around 1:30 a.m. and pointed a handgun at a victim while stealing items, according to authorities.

Officers later located a vehicle matching a description given by a witness and attempted to make contact.

Visitors will be able to purchase fair classics like kettle corn, deep-fried Oreos and much more. A full menu and map of vendors will be available on the fair’s website soon.
