PHOENIX — Phoenix on Sunday had its first sub-50 degree low since March, substitute teachers in the Kyrene School District are getting a pay increase, and a lottery ticket worth $8.8 million was sold at a Walmart in the West Valley.

Here are some of the biggest stories that headlined the Arizona news cycle over the weekend.


Phoenix temperature hits sub-50 for the first time since spring

Turn the heater on and get those fuzzy socks out– winter is approaching as some Valley residents saw some chilly temperatures Sunday morning.

The temperature reached 49 degrees just long enough to set the low temperature for the morning, the National Weather Service said in a tweet.

It was the first sub-50 degree low in Phoenix since March 27, according to NWS.


Kyrene School District approves higher pay for substitute teachers

The Kyrene School District Governing Board recently approved a pay increase for substitute teachers.

Substitute teachers in the school district that serves all of Ahwatukee and parts of Chandler, Guadalupe, Tempe, and the Gila River Indian Reservation will now be paid $175 per day, up from $115.

“In order to remain competitive in the East Valley and attract quality substitutes in Kyrene, it is necessary to raise the daily rate of pay for substitutes,” Executive Director of Talent Management Lisa Gibson said in a press release.

Long-term substitutes will also see an increase to $200 per day from $140, and retired teachers of the district who return to the classroom to be long-term substitutes will be paid $205.


The Pick lottery ticket sold at Walmart in Surprise hits $8.8 million jackpot 

The Arizona Lottery said a winning lottery ticket worth $8.8 million from Wednesday night’s The Pick drawing was sold at a Walmart at Waddell Road, west of Loop 303 in Surprise.

The winning numbers drawn were 11, 12, 16, 21, 39 and 44.

Thirteen other participants of The Pick won $2,000, 650 won $50 and almost 11,000 won $3.


Airbnb names Phoenix family as top new hosts in Arizona

Owners of a Charming Coronado Casita were named as the top new Airbnb hosts in Arizona.

The Moises’s already have 123 reviews and boast a 4.90 rating for their Phoenix listing after less than one year of accepting reservations on the site.

The one bed, one bath casita is listed for $87 per night and located in the Coronado District of Phoenix near the corner of McDowell Road and 12th Street.

It offers a shared hot tub, fire pit, corn hole along with free parking, television and WiFi.


ASU police wellness check turns into interstate effort to help lost elderly couple

Arizona State University police officers recently performed a wellness check that became an interstate effort to help a couple who authorities say were confused about where they were.

Officers checked on the couple, who was showing signs of confusion, on the evening of Nov. 22 in The Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints parking lot located at the ASU Polytechnic campus in Mesa, according to a press release.

Though the couple was in good health, they believed they were in Pennsylvania leading officers to contact the couple’s hometown agency — Moon Township Police Department — in an effort to gather more information.
