Video conferencing service Zoom to open Phoenix facility

PHOENIX — Video-conferencing service Zoom, which has become a staple as people socially distance during the coronavirus outbreak, announced plans on Thursday for a new research and development center in Phoenix.
The company is planning to hire up to 500 software engineers between the Phoenix site and the other new location in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
“Both Phoenix and Pittsburgh have incredibly well-educated, skilled, and diverse talent pools that are well-positioned to help support Zoom’s ongoing growth and continued success,” CEO Eric S. Yuan said in a release.
The location of the office has not been finalized, but the company is looking for spaces near Arizona State University to tap into recent graduates from the engineering program.

“Zoom’s expansion into the Phoenix market reflects the success of our efforts to grow and support a new economy for Arizona that is based on technology and innovation,” Michael Crow, university president, said in the release.
Crow said the school graduates 4,500 engineering students per year.
The California-based company rose in popularity with the coronavirus outbreak, which has forced people to work from home.
The company announced in an April blog post that the service has surpassed 300 million daily meeting participants.
