PHOENIX – An Arizona nonprofit will receive $9.1 million in federal funding to develop affordable housing in the West Valley city of Surprise for low-income seniors.

Phoenix-area based Gem Housing Solutions was awarded the grant to build a 99-unit apartment rental complex, the Department of Housing and Urban Development recently announced. The Arizona group’s total topped the list of awardees.

The grant monies are part of $143 million that is being distributed among 30 nonprofit organizations across the country and Washington D.C. to help low to very low-income seniors 62 and older stay in a place of their own.

Under the Section 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly program, renters will pay based on their income.

Program eligibility “requires residents to be very low-income or earning less than 50% of the area median income. However, most households in the Section 202 program earn less than 30% of the median for their area,” HUD said in a press release.

The West Valley city also partnered with the Housing Authority of Maricopa County to develop the Heritage at Surprise, a multiple-unit permanent supportive rental community near U.S. 60/Grand Avenue and Greenway Road.

We want to hear from you.
