PHOENIX — The U.S. Census Bureau is looking to hire thousands of Arizonans to help with the 2020 census.

Dennis Johnson, deputy regional director for the Census Bureau, told KTAR News 92.3 FM last week that the bureau wants to recruit about 50,000 workers for mostly part-time positions.

About a third of those will be hired and more than half of those will work in Maricopa County, according to Johnson.

“We’re going to be recruiting well into next year for all the census workers we need,” Johnson said.

Most of the jobs are for census takers, or those who visit homes of individuals who do not complete and return a questionnaire and interview them.

The jobs are temporary and expected to last only a few weeks, according to the 2020 census website.

Johnson encourages those who can fit part-time work into their schedules — namely retirees, students and stay-at-home parents — to apply.

“We want people who want to help their community,” Johnson said.

Most Arizona positions pay anywhere from $15 to $19 per hour.

Those who apply must be 18 years old, have a valid Social Security number and be a U.S. citizen.

KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Ashley Flood contributed to this report.
