PHOENIX — U.S. 60 between Superior and Miami was up and running again Wednesday after being closed for extended periods over the last two days.

The stretch of highway about 70 miles east of downtown Phoenix had been scheduled for a closure in both directions for four hours Monday so crews could take down part of the defunct Pinto Creek Bridge.

But the 72-year-old bridge, which stood alongside a new bridge that opened last month, was stubborn and didn’t come down as expected.

As a result, the Arizona Department of Transportation didn’t reopen U.S. 60 until Tuesday night, but did so with plans to close it again and resume the work at 9 a.m. Wednesday. The highway was reopened for good around 11 a.m., ADOT said.

Motorists can expect intermittent lane restrictions on occasion as crews continue removing debris, but ADOT isn’t anticipating any additional full closures of U.S. 60 related to the bridge project.

During the closures, traffic on U.S. 60 had to detour through Winkelman via State Route 177 in Superior and S.R. 77 in Globe, adding significant travel time between Superior and Miami.
