UArizona postpones October, December in-person commencements

PHOENIX — The University of Arizona postponed plans Wednesday for in-person commencements in October and December, citing ongoing coronavirus concerns.
The university will instead conduct online ceremonies and reschedule in-person graduations for a later date, as was previously done in May.
University of Arizona spring 2020 graduates were scheduled to graduate in person Oct. 30 with fall 2020 graduates scheduled to walk in December.
“Due to the nature of large gatherings wherein social distancing and limiting exposure are not realistic, we are unable to host this event or any in-person convocations or celebrations in December,” the university said in a press release.

University officials said it would involve students from both classes when making new plans for in-person graduation ceremonies.
Classes began in Tucson in late August with about 5,000 students on campus as part of the university’s phased reopening plan.
UArizona was the last of the state’s three public universities to begin its fall semester.
“We know many of you have been looking forward to these celebrations in person, however, the health and safety of our students, families, friends and communities must come first in our planning efforts,” the university said.
