PHOENIX — KTAR’s Community Spotlight this month focuses on the nonprofit group Thunderbirds and what they’ve accomplished for the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Thunderbirds Charities has raised more than $165 million in tournament history and gives it back to the community, Chairman Michael Golding said. This year’s theme is “Get back to giving back.”

Last year, he said the organization had a “boots-on-the-ground approach” for months with groups of its members visiting the various charities they support, often volunteering together.

“It was a great approach for our group to take a look at not only what we can do outside of just getting money into the hands that need it most, but getting support and getting help to them at the most important time of need during the COVID pandemic,” Golding said.

In total, they raised $3.8 million, he said.

“It reminded of us how amazing it is to be part of this group and how significant the impact our group, this community and this gold tournament has on this community, and we’re excited to get back to the significant impact that we have from a normal tournament.”

He added that the Thunderbirds will work to raise as much revenue as possible from the upcoming tournament to continue giving back to the community.

We want to hear from you.
