PHOENIX – After more than half a century of hospital volunteer work in the East Valley, a Tempe woman is about to serve her final shift.

Ruth Wootten, 90, will lend a hand at Banner Gateway Medical Center in Gilbert for the last time Monday, the hospital said in a press release.

Wootten got her start as a hospital volunteer in 1962 at Mesa Lutheran Hospital.

She continued cleaning bathrooms, doing laundry, making beds and pitching in wherever it was needed until the facility closed 45 years later, when it was known as Banner Mesa Medical Center.

Most recently, she’s been greeting visitors with a smile at the Banner Gateway information desk.

Kathy Williams, the hospital’s volunteer services director, said in the release that Wootten is no longer comfortable driving although her mind is “still sharp as a tack.”
