PHOENIX — The city of Tempe on Friday announced the members of the city’s public safety advisory task force, aimed at building trust, accountability and dialogue between the police department and the community.

Along with policies, hiring, use of technologies, training and data, the task force will focus on and how the “city engages with people who are Black, Indigenous, people of color, people experiencing homelessness and those with mental health challenges,” according to a press release.

“The task force will assist in formulating and recommending policies and procedures to reflect our shared values,” Tempe Mayor Corey Woods said in the release.

Woods, Vice Mayor Randy Keating, Councilmember Lauren Kuby and interim Police Chief Jeff Glover are a few that will serve on the task force alongside 16 community members who were selected based on their contributions to the city or affiliations.

The group includes former council members, community activists and religious leaders.

The community participants chosen represent diverse values and opinions reflective of the community, according to the release.

The group will meet twice a month, starting on Tuesday and ending on Dec. 21.

The strategic plan is expected in January 2021, according to the release, with community members speaking about the draft during public meetings early next year.
