PHOENIX – A teen was hospitalized Monday after being shot by a Peoria police sergeant, authorities said Tuesday.

The Peoria Police Department said the incident occurred around 8 p.m. as the sergeant was conducting a directed patrol near Monroe Street and 87th Avenue due to traffic complaints.

While the sergeant was parked, a vehicle slowly drove by him on Monroe, according to authorities. The 15-year-old suspect turned south onto 87th before making an abrupt U-turn, circled back and drove directly at the sergeant’s car, according to police.

The sergeant fired at least one round at the suspect, striking him in the face.

According to police, the sergeant was wearing a body camera, but the camera was not on because he was in his parked car monitoring traffic when the incident occurred.

The sergeant called for medical assistance. Additional officers responded and arrested the driver and the passenger.

The driver was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. As of Tuesday night, he was still being treated.

The passenger, also a juvenile, was released to an adult guardian.

No officers were injured during the incident.

It was the first shooting involving Peoria police this year, per KTAR News 92.3 FM tracking.
