PHOENIX — A 15-year-old boy was arrested Tuesday morning after he brought a gun to Marcos de Niza High School campus in Tempe.
Officers were called out to the campus after a school resource officer “learned of a troubling social media video depicting a student with a gun in a Marcos de Niza bathroom” Monday afternoon, according to the Tempe Police Department.
On Tuesday, school staff and the SRO were contacted by a concerned adult about a troubling video with a student having a gun. The SRO was able to review the video and identify the student who had the gun, according to police.
It is unknown if Monday’s video and the video the adult reported were the same video, according to authorities.
How was the teen arrested?
As the student arrived to school Tuesday morning the SRO, security and school staff approached him and he ran into a neighborhood. The campus and other nearby schools were placed on a lockdown from around 8:15 a.m. to 9 a.m.
The student was seen jumping over a number of fences and was ultimately found by officers in a backyard. A black handgun that looked like the one in the video was also found in the yard with the student, according to police.
Members of the community assisted in quickly identifying the student after the video was discovered, according to police.
