PHOENIX — A suspect who was driving a stolen car died following a crash in Glendale on Wednesday evening, authorities said.
The suspect, identified only as a Hispanic man in his 20s, was driving a black 2014 Honda Civic reported stolen out of Phoenix at a high rate of speed near 67th and Olive Avenues around 7:30 p.m. when the accident occurred, according to the Glendale Police Department.
The headlights of the Civic weren’t on and a 49-year-old woman driving a black 2013 Toyota Highlander attempted to take a left turn onto 67th Avenue, police said.
The stolen car had to then swerve to avoid the other vehicle but was unsuccessful, hitting the Highlander’s front corner. The Highlander, which had the woman’s two grandchildren on board, was pushed north about 30 feet north of the intersection. The Civic landed on the other side of the intersection.
The suspect was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. His passenger, an unidentified Hispanic woman in her 20s, was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
The woman and her grandchildren were hospitalized with minor injuries.
Authorities found weapons and other stolen property inside the Civic that were linked to robberies in Phoenix.
It’s unknown if impairment played a factor in the crash.
No other information was available.
