State Route 89A closure north of Sedona starting August 15

Aug 11, 2024, 7:15 AM

PHOENIX – Drivers using State Route 89A north of Sedona should expect closures and prepare for detour routes next week, authorities announced Thursday.

Rockfall mitigation work will close the switchbacks in Oak Creek Canyon for two hours in morning, starting on Aug 15. The work will shut down a three-mile stretch between Cookstove Draw and Oak Creek Vista, near mileposts 387 to 390.

The Arizona Department of Transportation said the state route will be closed in that area on Aug. 15 and Aug. 16 from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. The same area will be closed again on Aug. 19-23 from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.

ADOT recommends drivers traveling from Sedona to Flagstaff to use a detour along Interstate 17 and State Route 179.

The rockfall mitigation crews are stabilizing a cliff face above the state route where a rockslide occurred in 2023. According to ADOT, the safety project will last into the fall.

Drivers traveling SR 89A should expect only one lane to be open in that area, with a traffic signal allowing alternate traffic to pass. Additional restrictions include a 10-foot vehicle-width restriction in the work zone.
