Southwest Human Development hosting annual virtual book drive

PHOENIX — KTAR’s Community Spotlight this month focuses on a Valley nonprofit hosting its annual virtual book drive that encourages young children to read.

Southwest Human Development’s fourth annual Grow a Reader virtual book drive runs throughout May, but its website is already open.

Jake Adams, the nonprofit’s chief development officer, said the drive helps distribute about 80,000 books a year to Arizona children, mostly to ages 5 and under.

“The great thing about the Grow a Reader virtual book drive is you can purchase the books online and you can take advantage of the tax credit by doing that,” Adams told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Arizona’s Morning News. “It’s really a fabulous project that we’re doing.”

Adams said the drive raised over $20,000 last year. This year’s program has a goal of $30,000 raised, he added.

The funding will purchase books for donation to Arizona children and families participating in Southwest Human Development’s early literacy programs.

Those who want to donate to the drive can purchase individual books or bundles.

Adams encourages offices to offer employees a chance to donate, especially since most of the children on the receiving end often don’t have books readily available.

“If your office is looking for something to engage your colleagues and your staff, let us know,” Adams said.
